Ask which version the name refers to

  • Ingredient and brand

Liraglutide (Victoza, Saxenda) is the same ingredient across those brands.

  • Purpose

On 26 September 2026, weight management appeared under Saxenda’s approval, while Victoza’s uses included type 2 diabetes.

  • Generic wording

A generic contains the same medicine ingredient as a brand product and has its own approval. At that check, liraglutide generics had separate approvals: some matched Victoza’s diabetes use; others matched Saxenda’s weight use. The FDA did not treat a diabetes product as a pharmacy substitute for a weight product, or the other way round.

Read the dated supply note

As recorded on 26 September 2026, Saxenda’s maker planned its last shipments to the businesses that supply pharmacies for late January 2027.

The maker said fewer people were using Saxenda as other medicines became available. It said the decision was not prompted by a problem with safety or quality.

Ask what is actually available and how a change would be handled. An approval record cannot tell you what is on a pharmacy shelf.

Put the trial result in context

SCALE followed adults without diabetes for 56 weeks. Average weight loss was 8.4 kilograms with liraglutide, about 18.5 pounds. The dummy-injection group received no study drug and lost an average of 2.8 kilograms (roughly 6.2 pounds).

Ask how the proposed product and your own health compare with the people studied.
