Ask why a prepared version is proposed

Get the reason in plain words

  • What is being prepared?

Compounding describes preparing a drug by mixing or making it, instead of supplying the ready-made product.

  • Why this version?

Ask which need this preparation meets that the ready-made product cannot address.

  • Who makes it?

Request the full pharmacy name, plus the ingredient written on the prescription.

Keep approval separate from preparation

The Food and Drug Administration is the FDA; its position checked on 26 September 2026 was that compounded drugs have no agency approval.

The agency does not review each such product for quality, effectiveness and safety before it is marketed.

The federal copy rules at that check restricted pharmacies from repeatedly making close copies of medicines already on sale. A preparation can fall outside that copy restriction when the prescriber finds that its change makes an important difference to the named patient. Price alone cannot supply that reason.

Ask the prescriber to explain the change your health needs and why the ready-made medicine cannot meet that need. The copy rule alone does not settle whether your prescription meets every legal requirement.
